Le message de Jeffrey Sachs relayé par Ousmane Sonko : « Le FMI ne veut pas votre développement, mais que vous restiez pauvres et sages »
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko denounced Africa's dependence on "unjust and odious" debts and advocated for endogenous growth capable of ensuring the continent's sovereignty. "Africa is the only island of growth in this world. Everything is yet to be built here. Will this be done without Africans, as has always been the case since the slave trade, colonization, and neocolonialism? It is up to us to answer this. We must raise the level of the debate," he stated, emphasizing the responsibility of Africans themselves in their development.
Drawing on the words of American economist Jeffrey Sachs, whom he met in Addis Ababa, Sonko conveyed his message: "What interests the IMF is not your development. What interests them is that you remain poor and wise."
According to him, Senegal and Africa do not need debt cancellation or restructuring, but a 20-30 year reprieve, during which the continent can focus on its growth without being suffocated by debt service.
Ousmane Sonko believes that Africa must aim for double-digit annual endogenous growth, with a focus on infrastructure and education. "A group of African leaders sharing the same political will can launch the movement towards growth, and others will follow. You can't wait for 55 countries to be aligned to start the process," he insisted.
The Prime Minister emphasized Senegal's role: "My country now has the necessary leadership to be part of this group. Our fight was first and foremost for good governance, and it remains a fight for good governance."
Beyond growth, Sonko emphasized sovereignty and political leadership: "We must be role models in the management of public affairs. We are families, fathers, brothers and sisters; we must be exemplary and continue our fight for change despite resistance and challenges."
