Le Parti socialiste mise sur Macky Sall pour diriger l’ONU
The Socialist Party supports the candidacy of former President of the Republic, Macky Sall, for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN).
In a statement released to the public, the party indicated that it had taken note "with particular attention" of this candidacy put forward by Burundi, which had ensured its submission to the competent bodies of the UN.
"This initiative has particular significance in the context where Burundi currently holds the presidency of the African Union, under the authority of His Excellency President Evariste Ndayishimiye.
In this context, we also learned that President Macky Sall sent an official letter to the President of the Republic of Senegal, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Faye, requesting his country's support for this major international bid. The Senegalese Head of State indicated that he intended to await the necessary approvals and consultations before announcing his official position," the statement reads.
The Socialist Party emphasizes that it has also taken note of Macky Sall's letter of motivation, in which he highlights the need to strengthen multilateralism, consolidate international peace and promote greater justice between nations in a global context marked by multiple crises.
As a member of the Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR), the Socialist Party (PS) believes that this candidacy "far exceeds the individual ambition of one man." For the socialists, it is an ambition that concerns not only Senegal but, beyond that, the entire African continent.
"Since Burundi, assuming the presidency of the African Union, took the initiative to put forward this candidacy, Senegal and all its sons and daughters must support this approach. For this is not merely the project of an individual: it is the ambition of a nation and, beyond that, an aspiration carried by Africa, in the concert of nations. In this regard, the Socialist Party believes that President Macky Sall has a profile and background that meet the requirements of such an eminent position as that of Secretary-General of the United Nations," explains the note signed by Aminata Mbengue Ndiaye.
In a world marked by geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts, climate crises and growing economic inequalities, socialists believe that the international community needs leadership capable of prioritizing dialogue, seeking compromise and respecting the principles of multilateralism.
While noting that it is currently in the national political opposition, the Socialist Party believes that supporting the candidacy of a Senegalese to head the United Nations is a patriotic duty.
The Socialist Party is therefore calling on political forces, civil society actors and partners of Senegal to support this candidacy, which it considers an opportunity to strengthen the presence of Senegal and Africa on the international stage.
