ONU : Macky Sall lance son offensive diplomatique depuis l'Élysée
Following the official announcement of his candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), former Senegalese President Macky Sall has launched his campaign to succeed António Guterres. According to Le Quotidien, which reported the news, the campaign began Thursday at the Élysée Palace, where Macky Sall met with his close ally, French President Emmanuel Macron.
Although nothing has officially leaked from this private conversation, the stakes are clear, according to the same source: to secure France's vote in the United Nations Security Council and to use Paris' influence to convince other permanent members, starting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
To secure the presidency of the UN, the former head of state will still need to win over the three other permanent members of the Security Council – the United States, China, and Russia. The newspaper owned by the Avenir Communication group expects Macky Sall to soon embark on a tour of these three countries, supported behind the scenes by possible strategic phone calls from Emmanuel Macron.
