Pr. Diomaye : «La France est un partenaire important pour le Sénégal»
Relations between France and Senegal have become "more serene." This, in any case, is what President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared this Friday. In an interview with our colleagues at France24, he recalled that upon coming to power, he insisted that the partnership between the two countries "be renewed and updated. And on the economic front, there was never any question of losing an important partner."
"I have always considered France to be an important partner for Senegal, that France has an economic presence in Senegal with significant investments. At a time when we are diversifying our partnerships, when we are opening up to other partners, we cannot allow ourselves to lose any through excessive action," he said.
Regarding the closure of French bases, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye stated that 65 years after Senegal's independence, there was no longer any question of having foreign military bases in the country. However, he clarified that the closure of these military bases does not mean that Senegal was breaking with France.
"When we asked for the departure of French elements from Senegal, we also reaffirmed our desire to no longer have any military presence in our country. This was perhaps unfortunately perceived by some as a desire for a break, because, obviously, that's what seems to be happening, I was going to say what's in the air at the time. But we have never taken that approach," he said.
The head of state even announced that the intergovernmental seminar between Senegal and France will be held next November. It will take place in Dakar. "We will welcome it with great pleasure, as we usually do with all our partners," the head of state assured.
