Sécurité, défense, industrie : Erdogan dévoile le contenu de son tête-à-tête avec Sonko
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has welcomed his country's growing ties with Africa, saying he had discussed defense and security cooperation with Senegal's Prime Minister on Thursday, who was visiting Ankara.
"Today we discussed joint measures we can take in areas such as security, the defense industry and the fight against terrorism," Erdogan said during a televised press conference alongside Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
"We are pleased with the growing interest of our African brothers in Turkish defense products. We look forward to strengthening our solidarity in this area in the coming period," he said.
Turkey has consolidated its position in Africa in recent years, at a time when many countries on the continent are turning away from their former colonizers.
Ankara has signed defense agreements with a number of states across the continent, including Somalia, Libya, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Ghana.
And these agreements have opened up contracts for Turkish defense manufacturers, particularly for their drones, which are known to be reliable and inexpensive.
On Thursday, Mr. Erdogan hailed the African continent as the "star of our century" with its young demographics, dynamism and still-undiscovered beauties.
"No country with a global vision can ignore the African continent or turn its back on this magnificent geography," he said.
"We reject any arrogant, condescending or orientalist approach towards the African continent," he added, castigating anyone who criticized the Turkish-African partnership.
