Son audience avec le Pr. Diomaye : Ce qu’en dit la Directrice générale du FMI
On Tuesday, Kristalina Georgieva met with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The meeting took place in Nairobi, on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit. Following the Senegalese presidency, the IMF Managing Director spoke about the details of the meeting.
“We discussed reform priorities, debt management, and the importance of Senegal’s work on transparency,” she tweeted. She reassured Senegal of the IMF’s continued commitment. However, the IMF Managing Director remained silent on the central issue: the new program that Senegal has been requesting for nearly two years.
In April, Abebe Aemro Selassie, then Director of the IMF's African Department, offered some explanation for the delays in signing this program with Senegal. He cited a highly volatile context regarding market access, particularly concerning debt sustainability assessments.
“This requires anticipating economic prospects and market access conditions. In this unstable context for countries in a precarious market access situation, this work requires great rigor and in-depth reflection. Committing to an irreversible path is not the ideal solution,” he explained.
He added: “That is why we wanted to give the government time to develop a credible, financially viable strategy that avoids excessive austerity for the Senegalese people. These discussions require in-depth reflection and deliberation, and it is primarily up to the government to conduct them. We are at that stage.”
The Director of the IMF's African Department pointed out that the current regime in Senegal inherited a considerable debt. The question now is how to address it and find the best way to proceed.
