« Nous vivons des moments de fortes incertitudes » : Bassirou Diomaye Faye et le spectre d'un nouveau conflit mondial
The President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, addressed the United Nations on Wednesday, September 24, during the general debate of the 80th session of the General Assembly, held under the theme "Better together: more than 80 years in the service of peace, development and human rights."
In an international context marked by multiple tensions, his speech called for a refoundation of multilateralism and a collective awakening in the face of global threats. Faye opened his address by highlighting the current challenges: "We are living in times of great uncertainty (...) as if we were caught up in the excesses that have led humanity to two major catastrophes in the space of a generation." He denounced the logic of "double standards" and the domination of the law of the strongest, eighty years after the creation of the UN, in the face of crises such as the expansion of terrorism, persistent conflicts, climate change, global economic fragility and the decline of international solidarity.
On security challenges, the President focused on terrorism in the Sahel and political instability in Africa, calling for predictable and sustainable funding for peacekeeping operations. "Peace and security come at a price. Let us give ourselves the means to meet it," he insisted, reiterating Senegal's solidarity with countries fighting terrorism and calling for robust mandates and adequate resources. Regarding the Middle East, Faye strongly denounced the tragedy in Gaza, describing the situation as "hell for millions of souls."
As Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, he reaffirmed that only the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state, within secure and recognized borders, can ensure lasting peace.
