Panel scientifique de l'ONU sur l'IA : La Sénégalaise Dr Adji Bousso Dieng nommée parmi les 40 experts mondiaux
UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Wednesday the creation of the first-ever Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Among the 40 experts selected from around the globe is the brilliant Senegalese researcher, Dr. Adji Bousso Dieng.
Dr. Dieng will sit alongside luminaries such as Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa. This elite group aims to become humanity's scientific compass on AI, modeling its approach on that of the IPCC for climate.
At a press conference, Antonio Guterres described the panel as a direct response to the "Pact for the Future" adopted by member states. The objective is clear: to bridge the knowledge gap and assess the real impacts of AI on our economies and societies. "AI is advancing at lightning speed. No country can grasp the whole picture alone. We need a shared understanding to build effective safeguards," the Secretary-General stated.
A drastic selection process
The appointment of Dr. Adji Bousso Dieng is not a coincidence. It follows a global call for applications that attracted more than 2,600 candidates. The 40 selected experts possess in-depth expertise in diverse fields, including machine learning, data governance, cybersecurity, and human rights.
It is important to emphasize that these experts will serve in their personal capacity, guaranteeing total independence from governments, companies or institutions.
The first milestones are set for July 2026
The panel, whose mandate is three years, is already at work. Its very first report is expected for the Global Dialogue on AI Governance scheduled for next July.
Through this initiative, the UN aims to regain control over a technology that is radically transforming the world. As Antonio Guterres concluded: "The question is whether we will shape this transformation together, or whether we will let it shape us."
