« AAKIMO 2 » : Un documentaire choc sur les ravages des feux de brousse et du surpâturage au Sénégal
Director Nicolas Van Ingen unveiled his latest documentary, "AAKIMO 2: Toroxal suuf – The Earth is Tired," on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the Seanama Hall in Sea Plaza. This second installment continues the exploration begun in "AAKIMO 1" by addressing two major environmental scourges threatening Senegalese ecosystems: bushfires and overgrazing.
The documentary is divided into two complementary segments. In 15 minutes, this first episode exposes the ecological and social consequences of the repeated fires that devastate the forest and savannah each year. For about twenty minutes, the second part analyzes the destructive effects of excessive animal pressure on natural resources.
"I was inspired by the vision of these fires ravaging our lands. The consequences are enormous for the populations who depend on these resources for their survival," the director confided.
Nicolas Van Ingen devoted an entire year to this project, between data collection and interviews with specialists, with the ambition of "reaching and raising awareness among viewers".
The screening was followed by a lively discussion moderated by Professor Adams Tidjani, Director of IMEM. The panel included high-level experts such as Dr. Tamsir Mbaye, Director of Livestock at ISRA, and Professor Cheikh Mbow, Director of the Ecological Monitoring Center (CSE). Together, they analyzed the technical mechanisms of these environmental crises and proposed potential solutions.
The Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAF) Resident Representative for Senegal and The Gambia, Jonathan Nowak, stressed the urgent need for sustainable resource management to guarantee food security and the stability of local communities. “The stakes are crucial. Overgrazing and bushfires threaten the very balance of our ecosystems,” he stated, while commending the work of Nicolas Van Ingen and journalist Ibrahima Gassama for highlighting these often-hidden realities.
As a director, Van Ingen's challenge was to craft a compelling narrative to maintain attention on urgent climate issues. The ultimate goal is to spark collective reflection and encourage both public and private actors to take concrete action to protect the environment in Senegal.
