60 millions de FCFA et lobbying : Les connexions entre Karim Wade, Nina Keita et Jeffrey Epstein dévoilées
The declassified files related to Jeffrey Epstein shed light on the billionaire's role as an intermediary between Karim Wade, son of former president Abdoulaye Wade, and Nina Keita. While the published documents do not specify the exact nature of the relationship between these two individuals, they do detail the involvement of President Ouattara's niece and Jeffrey Epstein in the efforts undertaken to secure the release of Karim Wade, who was sentenced in 2015 to six years in prison for illicit enrichment.
At the time of his conviction, the former Senegalese minister was seeking to mobilize his international network. The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) consortium reveals that he solicited Jeffrey Epstein's help to regain his freedom and rehabilitate his image. In September 2015, an associate of the Senegalese official contacted Epstein to ask him to finance a lobbying campaign targeting influential figures in the United States and at the UN. In an email cited by the OCCRP, she specified that the total cost for a three-month mission amounted to US$100,000, or approximately 60 million CFA francs, a sum they were prepared to pay immediately.
The OCCRP investigation indicates that this sum was indeed paid. The newspaper Le Monde provides a crucial detail, revealing that the $100,000 passed through Nina Keita's personal bank account, as she acted as an intermediary in the transaction. Furthermore, an invoice from Karim Wade's Senegalese lawyer, dated May 29, 2014, was sent to Southern Trust Company, Jeffrey Epstein's investment firm, and listed legal assistance for monitoring transactions and investments.
To support Karim Wade, Jeffrey Epstein activated his high-level international contacts. In 2015, he approached Thorbjörn Jagland, then Secretary General of the Council of Europe, to explore the possibility of appealing to the European Court of Human Rights. In April 2016, a partner at the lobbying firm Nelson Mullins informed Epstein that a contact was actively working behind the scenes to pressure Macky Sall and his administration, with the support of the US ambassador.
In June 2016, President Macky Sall finally granted Karim Wade a pardon, and he immediately left Senegal for Qatar. Upon his release from prison, Nina Keita sent an explicit message to Jeffrey Epstein: "Thank you for everything you did for him!!!!" Although these revelations are documented, no legal proceedings against Karim Wade have been initiated in the United States in connection with the Epstein case, and requests from the newspaper Le Monde to the Ivorian presidency and Nina Keita have gone unanswered.
