Mondiaux de Tokyo: La colère noire des athlètes sénégalais face au manque d’accompagnement
With just days to go before the World Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place in Tokyo from September 13 to 21, 2025, anger is brewing in the Senegalese camp. At a press conference this Saturday, several athletes from the national team strongly denounced the lack of support and consideration they feel they are experiencing.
Amath Faye, captain of the Senegalese athletics team, spoke on behalf of his teammates. " We are here to denounce the lack of support for athletes scheduled to compete in the Tokyo World Championships. Even those who were at the Olympic Games were only supported a week before the competition," he said.
According to him, despite the efforts of the technical management, preparation programs have been submitted for months to the Ministry of Sports, without any feedback.
"To my knowledge, no funding has been released for training camps," he laments. "No Senegalese athlete qualified for these world championships has received financial support to start their season," the athlete added.
A situation that Amath Faye considers unacceptable for such high-level competitions. "High-level competition is about planning and long-term work. We're going to do our utmost, but we're alerting the leaders so they can take responsibility in the future," he warns.
Louis François Mendy, who qualified for the 110m hurdles, did not mince his words against the Senegalese Athletics Federation. He particularly denounced the attitude of President Sara Oualy, whom he accused of being completely out of touch with the athletes' realities.
"Sara Oualy isn't doing her part. He doesn't even bother to call the athletes. I haven't heard from him in six months. The day before yesterday, he just asked me if morale was good. Do you think this is serious?" he wonders.
For him, only the technical director of the federation maintains a constant link with the competitors.
With less than a week to go until the major global event, the mood is one of frustration. While Senegalese athletes hope to shine through their talent and determination, they bitterly regret not being able to do so in optimal conditions.
