Pêches : Bassirou Diomaye Faye fixe de nouvelles priorités pour une exploitation durable
The President of the Republic reiterated this Wednesday, during the Council of Ministers meeting, the central role of the fisheries sector in the national economy and social stability. Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye emphasized the need to preserve and sustainably manage fish stocks, two key areas for the sector's recovery.
In this context, the President of the Republic instructed the Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy to strengthen the fight against illegal fishing, to systematize biological rest periods, and to reinforce the monitoring and control mechanisms for fishing zones. He also requested an evaluation of the impact of audits and measures to freeze agreements, as well as the regulation of fishing licenses in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
“The Head of State also stressed the urgency of accelerating the implementation of a new fisheries policy, based on the optimal exploitation of resources, the adaptation of artisanal fishing and a better availability of fishery products on the local market at affordable prices. He also insisted on the inclusive updating of the Fisheries Code and the strengthened application of the Aquaculture Code,” the document received states.
Finally, the President urged the Government to increase infrastructure and equipment dedicated to aquaculture, accelerate the modernization of wharves, canoes, and fishing gear, and launch a renovation plan for the Pikine National Fish Market. He also advocated for a more inclusive and transparent governance model for the sector.
