Cheikh Diba, the Minister of Finance and Budget, who was questioned this Friday at the National Assembly, addressed the discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). "The negotiations with the IMF are going very well," he stated. But why is the long-awaited agreement, which would allow Senegal and the Bretton Woods institution to embark on a new program, taking so long? Why are the discussions dragging on?
The IMF is more cautious
“They’re dragging on a bit, one might get that impression. But remember that the misreporting in question here is the biggest in the IMF’s history, with approximately 44 percentage points of GDP concealed. So, naturally, the Fund is a bit more cautious in its approach to the various issues on all subjects,” he stated after his hearing. He added, “The positive thing is that we get along well, we have good discussions.”
Areas of uncertainty clarified
The Minister of Finance noted that during the Africa Forward summit held in Nairobi this week, the President of the Republic met with the Managing Director of the IMF. During the meeting, "many areas of uncertainty were clarified" regarding the instruments the Senegalese government intends to implement. This is to provide effective responses to the various "concerns that divide us with the IMF in terms of negotiations," he said.
