Gaz vs solaire : L'ingénieur Mbaye Hadj tranche le débat
Energy engineer Mbaye Hadj calls for a pragmatic approach to Senegal's energy transition, rejecting the idea of exclusive reliance on solar power. "Where 100 hectares of solar panels produce barely 50 MW, a combined-cycle gas-fired power plant can supply more than 3,000 MW," he emphasizes, denouncing a "hypocritical discourse" about solar power's ability to drive industrial development alone. With resources in both solar and gas, he emphasizes the strategic role of gas as an effective driver for rapid growth.
Mr. Hadj proposes a balanced strategy: maximizing the use of gas to support industrialization, while developing solar energy as a priority for residential, rural, and agricultural uses, in order to reduce energy bills. "Betting solely on solar energy, when the country has gas, is like abandoning a galloping horse to bet on a snail in a decisive race," he argues. He urges Senegal to take responsibility for its energy choices, prioritizing its interests rather than seeking to please the international community with unsuitable concepts.
