Promotion locale : Le geste fort de Mabouba Diagne pour encourager les artisans chausseurs
On the sidelines of the 2026 International Fair of Agriculture and Animal Resources (FIARA), the Minister of Agriculture, Mabouba Diagne, offered a forward-looking perspective on the crafts sector, seeing it as a key driver of the country's economic transformation. According to the Minister, this sector is not limited to the preservation of heritage, but constitutes a genuine lever for wealth and job creation, particularly through the promotion of national expertise expressed in high value-added sectors. He notably highlighted the remarkable dynamism of the fashion and textile industry, citing dyeing, embroidery, and design as vectors for promoting our local materials on the global market.

This vibrant artisanal sector is also evident in the leather goods industry, where the quality of bags, shoes, and accessories now meets international standards. Putting his words into action to support this local production, the minister personally encouraged the sector by ordering two pairs of shoes from an artisan exhibiting at the trade fair. Beyond these specific sectors, Mabouba Diagne emphasized that the arts and crafts, from sculpture and jewelry to basketry, play a crucial role in diversifying the national economy by blending tradition with contemporary design.

The future prospects for the sector are ambitious and quantifiable. The minister expressed his conviction that by 2034, Senegalese crafts could generate more than 130,000 formal jobs, provided that the necessary structural conditions are met. According to him, this growth hinges on improved access to financing, appropriate training, and sustained support for stakeholders in the sector.
In this strategy, the development of "Made in Senegal" exports is seen as a fundamental lever for conquering new markets.

By reaffirming his full support for this pillar of economic sovereignty, Mabouba Diagne places handicrafts at the heart of the national development strategy. He believes that the growth of carpentry, wrought ironwork, and high-end crafts not only contributes to the growth of the Gross Domestic Product but also strengthens the appreciation of Senegal's cultural heritage. It is through this alliance between modernity and ancestral know-how that the sector will, in his view, be able to fully play its role in the emergence of a strong and self-reliant economy.
