With Senegalese exports to the United Arab Emirates increasing from 34.1 billion FCFA in 2019 to 54.8 billion FCFA in 2023, and imports surging from 89.2 billion to 373.3 billion FCFA over the same period, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko begins a crucial working visit today from September 8 to 12. This trip, anchored in the implementation of the "Jubbanti Koom" Economic and Social Recovery Plan, aims to expand these trade exchanges and draw on the Emirati model to diversify the Senegalese economy, particularly in the management of oil resources.
Received by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the Federation and Emir of Abu Dhabi, Sonko seeks to revitalize bilateral cooperation, one year after the head of state's visit. Exports, driven by phosphoric acid and gold, and imports dominated by refined hydrocarbons and equipment, demonstrate potential to be tapped.
This trip aims to define a mutually beneficial partnership, addressing themes such as public-private partnerships, urban development, modern infrastructure, innovative energy, and agri-food processing. Since the 1970s, the UAE has evolved from humanitarian aid to a key investor role in Senegal, with DP World managing the Dakar terminal since 2008 and building the Ndayane deep-sea port. Projects such as rural solar power plants, hydropower initiatives, and the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Center for Innovation, established in 2019 in Dakar, strengthen this alliance. Sonko intends to seize this opportunity to explore new perspectives, aligning Senegalese ambitions with Emirati expertise in energy transition and economic development.
