Audience avec Cheikh Diba, Situation du Sénégal : La Déclaration de la Dg du FMI, Kristalina Georgieva
Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and Cheikh Diba, Senegal's Minister of Finance, met on Monday in Saudi Arabia. Following the meeting, the IMF chief described it as "constructive" with the Senegalese finance minister, on the sidelines of the Alula Conference on Emerging Economies.
Regarding the situation in Senegal, facing budgetary pressures stemming from the so-called hidden debt affair, Kristalina Georgieva "welcomes the remarkable progress made in terms of transparency and fiscal accountability." However, in her post on X, she assures that they are "fully committed to supporting ongoing reforms and macroeconomic stability, for the good of the Senegalese people."
Indeed, upon taking office, Senegal's current leaders revealed the existence of a hidden debt. While the previous regime had reported it at 74% of GDP, the outstanding debt was ultimately assessed at 132% by the IMF. The IMF suspended its program with Senegal, and since then, the country has faced a very precarious budgetary situation.
