Ponction des salaires : ce facteur qui aggrave la colère des enseignants
Following several G7 action plans, teachers have suffered what are considered "excessive" salary cuts. According to union representatives, striking teachers have seen their pay reduced by between 100,000 and 300,000 CFA francs, depending on their employment status and the number of days they have been on strike. This amount sometimes represents up to a third of their salary. Since then, teachers have become more radicalized.
The reason the profession is so sensitive to these deductions is because there is another factor that aggravates the situation: debt.
In reality, many teachers are heavily in debt. Many have taken out one or more loans, usually to finance the purchase of a home, but sometimes also for other needs. Therefore, even the slightest cut in their salary makes making ends meet even more difficult.
"The reason teachers are so angry is that when they went to the bank, some of them found almost nothing in their accounts," explains one teacher.
According to him, despite the significant salary increases implemented under President Macky Sall, teachers remain heavily indebted. Some find themselves with only 200,000 to 250,000 CFA francs after bank deductions related to their loans. Under these circumstances, a 100,000 CFA franc deduction effectively deprives the teacher of 40%, or even half, of what little income they have left.
Furthermore, the law stipulates that a quarter of the salary belongs to the family and cannot be withdrawn except by court order. Consequently, some teachers, having already spent three-quarters of their salary, go to court to obtain a judge's authorization to incur a debt on the remaining quarter.
Under these conditions, even the slightest deduction can have drastic consequences on their financial situation.
