Sénégal et FMI, un dialogue renouvelé pour restaurer la confiance
During his audience with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission on October 23, 2025, the Minister of Economy, Planning and Cooperation, Abdourahmane Sarr, defended a budgetary trajectory presented as sustainable, while reaffirming the government's desire to quickly finalize a new economic and financial program with the institution.
This meeting, following on from the discussions in Washington during the Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, aimed to consolidate a framework for cooperation based on stability, transparency and budgetary credibility.
Behind this desire to conclude an agreement lies a central issue: restoring market confidence after several months of uncertainty over public debt and macroeconomic balances.
The government is emphasizing the mobilization of internal resources, the use of local currency financing and improving the quality of public spending.
The objective is to put fiscal policy back in the service of recovery while avoiding new imbalances.
This direction marks a strategic shift in the country's economic governance. Less dependent on external borrowing, Senegal intends to rely on its domestic capabilities while preserving the credibility conferred by collaboration with the IMF.
The future program should strengthen financial discipline, support productive investments and ensure rigorous and transparent management of public funds.
For the Diomaye-Sonko government, this step represents both a test and an opportunity, that of demonstrating that a sovereign and responsible model can prevail in a demanding global economic environment.
