Sénégal : Les contours des discussions entre Sonko et la délégation de la Banque mondiale
As announced on Friday, Ousmane Sonko received the World Bank Vice President for West and Central Africa, Ousmane Diagana. Diagana, accompanied by other World Bank Group officials, stated that they "congratulated the Prime Minister and his government on everything Senegal has done recently, based on principles of transparency, to make the macroeconomic situation much more sustainable."
Mr. Diagana added that they also discussed with the head of the Senegalese government the programs that the World Bank Group finances in Senegal. The objective is to see "how to ensure that these programs are aligned with Senegal's priorities," he said.
"Overall, there was a very important alignment between what the Prime Minister presented to us and what we also have in terms of interventions," said Mr. Diagana, speaking to national television after the hearing.
Given the high expectations of the Senegalese people, the World Bank, whose intervention in Senegal now exceeds $4 billion, will need to be "much faster and much more efficient in implementing its programs," he said. The institution might also question the appropriateness of some of its interventions.
"If it turns out that interventions are not necessarily the most urgent or the most useful, given the current context and priorities at the moment, we can find an arrangement so that these projects can be redirected," said Mr. Diagana.
