SODEFITEX : La filière cotonnière sénégalaise confirme sa montée en puissance
The Senegalese cotton sector is showing significant growth in 2025, with a 60% increase in yields, according to SODEFITEX. Cultivated areas will reach 21,355 hectares, with an expected production of 25,000 tons, a level not seen in over a decade. In Kédougou, the projected production is 5,600 tons, with yields exceeding the West African average, highlighting the exceptional productive potential of this region.
This growth results from a combination of agricultural modernization, increased mechanization, and enhanced scientific support, which optimize farming practices and improve fiber quality. The structuring of the sector, bringing together producers, processors, and public institutions, also helps to secure markets and make production more competitive at the regional level.
Senegal is now positioning itself to surpass Benin in terms of productivity and establish itself as an emerging player in the African cotton market. This momentum opens up export opportunities, job creation, and strengthened agricultural sovereignty, while offering an example of the successful transformation of a traditional sector into an engine of economic and territorial development.
