BAKEL : La rentrée des classes hypothéquée dans la commune de Ballou

In the Bakel department, the rising waters of the Senegal River, due in part to releases from the Manantali dam, are causing concern. From Ballou to Yaféra, passing through Aroundou, Kounghany, and Golmy, in the commune of Ballou, the waters have invaded agricultural production, schools, mosques, and various arteries. This is forcing people to travel by canoe. Government employees, whose offices are flooded, are beginning to abandon their posts.

While some of the victims have been relocated to makeshift sites set up for the occasion, due to the flooding of schools, others have taken refuge on the terraces of their homes or with neighbors.

With less than a week to go before the start of classes, the "Ubi téy, jang téy" concept is jeopardized. "We're not even thinking about opening classes, because the entire community is preoccupied with this situation, which is only getting worse every day with the river waters continuing to invade the villages in the community," laments Mamadou Bathily, a local elder in Aroundou.

He laments the lack of state support. "We have received no support from the state, let alone a visit from administrative authorities, even though billions have been distributed to the victims of Touba. It's as if the Bakel department isn't part of Senegal," he fumes.
