CFEE : Ces résultats exceptionnels qui interrogent
The results of the Elementary School Leaving Certificate exam are in. For 2026, the pass rate was 94.49%, 23.76% higher than in 2025 when the pass rate was around 71%. This performance would have been cause for celebration, were it not for the enormous gap compared to last year and, above all, the record-breaking result. Today, it is primarily the "spectacular increase" that is raising questions.
“These unprecedented results raise several questions regarding the assessment system and the mechanisms for progression to 6th grade,” Cosydep emphasizes in a press release concerning the CFEE results. This is all the more concerning given that no exceptional measures that could justify this rate have been identified, apart from the elimination of the entrance exam for 6th grade.
Cosydep points out that year-to-year fluctuations in CFEE results are generally less than 10 points. For example, a 10-point decrease was observed between 2020 and 2021, compared to an 11-point increase between 2021 and 2022. The largest discrepancy to date remains the 16-point decrease between 2023 and 2024. "Therefore, the 23.76-point increase between 2025 and 2026 warrants objective analysis to identify the explanatory factors and draw lessons for future sessions," add Cheikh Mbow and colleagues.
In its attempt to explain the situation, Cosydep points to a nationwide trial run conducted in May. However, the NGO questions whether this exercise actually addressed the shortcomings one month before the exam. What about the 150 hours lost during the teachers' strike? "Could the competency-based assessment system be a key contributing factor?"
Faced with this series of seemingly unanswered questions, Cosydep has chosen to formulate recommendations to consolidate the 10-year core curriculum, redefine the concept of "quality," and optimize the determinants of quality. This last point implies, among other things, adherence to the required teaching hours, reduced class sizes, the availability of resources, suitable classrooms, motivated teachers, and relevant curricula.
