Crise à l’Ucad : ces mesures désapprouvées par le Saes
Prioritizing security over university governance, suspending student associations, and closing the social campus are all measures taken at various levels, but all disapproved of by the UCAD branch of the Autonomous Union of Higher Education (SAES). In a statement dated Friday, February 13, the UCAD branch of SAES argues that "the suspension of student associations creates an institutional vacuum that weakens student representation mechanisms."
The union believes the focus should be on de-escalation by releasing the remaining detained students and preserving existing channels of representation. The Saes, which is awaiting a gesture of openness in this tense context, is calling for the lifting of the suspension of student associations. Regarding the ad hoc committee, the Saes hopes it will be inclusive and transparent, and that it will go beyond the immediate crisis to address the underlying issues. "Any reform of student representation must aim for institutional consolidation, not the temporary management of a crisis," the Saes warns.
Regarding the resumption of classes, the Saes (Student Union) believes the necessary conditions are not yet in place. The union argues that teaching is impossible without social services. "The academic campus and the social campus form an inseparable functional unit. Without catering, accommodation, and the effective operation of social services, any resumption of classes remains structurally fragile. Without students present in adequate material and psychological conditions, there can be no effective teaching."
Therefore, the Saes calls for the immediate reopening of the social campus for the effective resumption of classes, but above all for the establishment of a calm atmosphere conducive to teaching and research. "There can be no normalization of the academic calendar without first normalizing the university space in all its dimensions. We cannot demand serenity while maintaining a climate of tension."
The union also demands truth and justice in the death of student Abdoulaye Ba. "The search for truth cannot be selective or biased; it must address all responsibilities, whatever they may be. The autopsy results call for a rigorous clarification of the facts and the establishment of responsibilities, in strict accordance with the rule of law." The Saes union also requests support for the injured.
Regarding security at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), the union calls on the State to reconsider its approach. The union does not see this as a self-serving demand, but rather as the foundation of academic legitimacy. "When security management tends to replace academic governance, the institution's equilibrium is weakened. Public order cannot be sustainably built against university autonomy." The union reminds the authorities that the university has its own regulatory mechanisms, which it is urgent to prioritize instead of relying solely on policing.
