The case of the 24 students excluded from Jules Sagna High School for "cheating" during the second semester exams of the 2024-2025 academic year has had a happy ending, thanks to the intervention of the mayor of Thiès, Dr. Babacar Diop, who made it possible to obtain their reintegration into the educational system.

Indeed, on Monday, November 3rd, a crucial meeting was held at the Regional Training Center for Education Personnel (CRFPE), chaired by the regional education inspector, Gana Sène. In attendance were the mayor, education and training inspectors (IEF), representatives from the unions, parent-teacher associations, the Cosydep (a local inter-municipal organization), and several school partners. The meeting's objective was to define a fair and humane solution to this affair, which has profoundly shaken the education system.

From the outset of the discussions, the regional education inspector praised the initiative of the mayor of Thiès, describing it as "beneficial" for preserving the school climate. Dr. Babacar Diop reiterated that he was undertaking this mediation in his capacity as mayor, teacher, and social worker.

Aware of the seriousness of the offenses committed, he urged everyone to combine firmness with compassion. "The students made mistakes, that's undeniable, but our mission as educators is also to teach them how to get back on their feet," he declared, advocating for a structured and responsible reintegration. The parents, deeply affected, acknowledged the gravity of the situation and reiterated their apologies to the teaching staff and academic authorities.

They requested the removal of the disciplinary records from their children's baccalaureate transcripts, believing they would jeopardize their future. The students, for their part, presented a letter of apology to the principal of Jules Sagna High School, expressing their regret and their desire to make amends.

The headmaster recounted the events. On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, several students were caught in possession of the corrected history and geography exam paper. The police intervention, alerted the same day, triggered a chain reaction: crowds gathered, insults directed at teachers, and the dissemination of offensive videos on social media. These excesses deeply shocked the teaching staff and tarnished the school's image.

The teachers denounced the smear campaign they were targeted by, while agreeing to forgive in the name of the educational mission.

At the end of the discussions, the school inspector condemned cheating and indiscipline, while insisting on the need to give these young people a second chance, because the role of the school is not to break destinies, but to correct their trajectory.

Following the meeting, it was decided that the students involved would be reintegrated into other high schools in the city, in consultation with the school principals present. Psychological and academic support will be provided, including a day of discussions during which the students will publicly apologize. The inspector also granted the principal of Jules Sagna High School the authority to review, on a case-by-case basis, requests to have disciplinary records removed.

An investigation has been launched to identify the source of the exam leaks and to strengthen exam security in Thiès. All educational stakeholders have praised the mayor's mediation, which prioritized dialogue and forgiveness without compromising the authority of the schools.
