Crise scolaire : L’UE-SBNB dénonce une « punition collective » sous l'ère Pastef
The Union of Teachers of Senegal Bi Nu Bokk (UE-SBNB) has spoken out against what it calls "massive and arbitrary deductions" from the salaries of teachers who have observed a strike order. In a statement released in Dakar, the union cites deductions ranging from 50,000 to over 200,000 CFA francs, sometimes representing between 30% and 60% of monthly salaries. According to the organization, thousands of teachers across the country are affected, a situation that is plunging many families into poverty, in a context marked by a rising cost of living.
The EU-SBNB paints a bleak picture of the national situation, stating that the country is going through "a period of serious turmoil" since the Pastef party, led by Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, came to power. The union believes that the salary deductions were decided "without genuine dialogue or any attempt at appeasement" and sees them as a "logic of collective punishment" against teachers.
University tensions and tributes
The statement also addresses the tensions that have arisen on university campuses in recent months. The UE-SBNB specifically mentions the "violation of academic freedom" and the repression of students, referring to the death of Abdoulaye Bâ. The union expresses its respect for the student's memory and offers its condolences to his family and the university community, stating that "nothing can justify violence, especially not in the temples of knowledge."
Beyond salary cuts, the EU-SBNB highlights several structural problems, such as delays in scholarship payments, administrative hurdles related to promotions and reclassifications, teacher shortages in certain school districts, and legitimate salary demands. The organization calls on teachers, from primary to higher education, to demonstrate "determination and solidarity" and to remain united in order to achieve their demands.
The union's demands
The organization is demanding, in particular, an immediate halt to what it considers arbitrary deductions, the opening of "serious" negotiations, the prompt payment of scholarships, and concrete solutions to the grievances of teachers and healthcare workers. It is also calling for respect for trade union freedoms.
The union also welcomes President Barthélémy Dias's stance, which it considers "courageous and responsible." In conclusion, the EU-SBNB calls for "a return to republican values, social justice, and respect for intermediary bodies," asserting that "Senegal deserves a responsible, fair, and responsive state."
