Crise universitaire : L'UCAD explore les pistes de sortie de crise
The Rector of Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD), Professor Alioune Badara Kandji, has begun a series of meetings aimed at restoring calm following the tensions that erupted after the police entered the student residence, an incident that resulted in the death of student Abdoulaye Ba. This Monday, the Rector visited the family home of the deceased to offer his condolences. He was accompanied by a large delegation including deans, staff, representatives of student unions, and members of the social dialogue committee.
Following this, Professor Kandji met with UCAD's social partners to explore ways to resolve the crisis. He received, in turn, the SAES Coordination, the UCAD section of the SDES, and the inter-union group of administrative and technical staff. Addressing the union representatives, the Rector acknowledged that the academic campus had suffered repercussions from the events at the COUD. Hence, according to him, the urgent need to work towards a positive outcome for the university.
The unions are advocating for the inclusion of students
The unions emphasized the need to de-escalate the situation and prioritize dialogue. "We must save the academic year and protect the university from any violence," declared Professor Bodian, coordinator of the SAES union for the Dakar campus. The SUDES/ESR union echoed this sentiment. "Dialogue is the only solution. It must be inclusive and include the students," asserted Professor Sylvestre Kouakou.
The PATS (Administrative, Technical, and Social Workers) echoed this sentiment, arguing that negotiations must involve "those elected by their peers." The unions also made clear demands: the release of the remaining detained students, the reopening of the student social center, and the reinstatement of student associations.
104 students released, three charged
Regarding the arrests, the Rector clarified that of the 107 students initially detained, 104 have been released. The remaining three have been referred to the public prosecutor's office, a situation he stated he could not comment on at this stage of the proceedings. Concerning the student residence, he expressed hope for its reopening "as soon as possible."
As for the suspension of the student associations, he presents it as a precautionary measure intended to ease tensions. The Academic Council could meet to reinstate them as soon as calm has been restored.
Towards a coordinated exit from the crisis
The social partners expressed their willingness to support the Rectorate in finding a solution. "If we can help, we will do so," assured Professor Kouakou. "We are fully prepared to collaborate," added Dr. Mamadou Bodian. The inter-union group representing administrative and technical staff, for its part, urged the Rector to use his influence with the authorities on matters that do not fall directly under his jurisdiction.
Praising the "positive spirit" of the unions, Professor Kandji said he was counting on "the internal resources of the university community" to overcome this crisis.
