Crise à l’UCAD : Amsatou Sow Sidibé propose des assises nationales pour repenser l’université
The president of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) delivered her analysis of the deep crisis shaking Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD). Between calls for calm, criticisms of security management, and a plea for structural reform, Professor Amsatou Sow Sidibé described the current situation as "more dramatic than previous ones."
Professor Amsatou Sow Sidibé, a tenured law professor, said she was deeply affected by recent events. "I am in great pain," she confided this Sunday during the program "Point de vue" on RTS. The legal expert believes that the violence observed surpasses previous crises. "The scale of the clashes and the images being circulated reflect a worrying turning point," she stated, describing "terrible" scenes marked by injured students and burned-out rooms.
Faced with this escalation, the president of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) urged the authorities to prioritize a de-escalation approach. She specifically advocated for the release of arrested student leaders, the reopening of university restaurants, and the resumption of normal campus activities. Emphasizing the social dimension of the crisis, she noted that many students, who had come from remote areas, were left without accommodation or food. "A hungry belly has no ears," she declared, adding that the closure of social services had exacerbated tensions.
Professor Amsatou Sow Sidibé also condemned the intervention of the defense and security forces, denouncing the "unacceptable" images of violence against students. Furthermore, she demanded a full investigation into the death of student Abdoulaye Ba and called for "rigorous and impartial" inquiries to determine responsibility.
For this academic, beyond managing the immediate crisis, it reveals structural weaknesses, notably the chronic instability of the academic calendar and the limitations of the LMD system, which she considers ill-suited to local realities due to insufficient resources. To break free from these cycles of violence in a lasting way, she proposes organizing "national university conferences," under the guidance of a strong mediator and within an inclusive framework.
The goal would be to fundamentally rethink the governance of higher education, stabilize academic years, and restore trust. She also called for dialogue between authorities, academics, and students to avoid a lost academic year. "Without peace, nothing can be built," she concluded.
