Crise dans l’enseignement supérieur : les élèves du lycée de Saraya en solidarité avec le CA-UCAD
The protest is gaining ground. At the call of the Collective of associations and coordinators of the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (CA-UCAD), the students of the Saraya high school massively deserted the classrooms this Tuesday, thus joining the call for a total cessation of educational activities decreed for 72 hours across the entire national territory.
As in several schools across the country, the atmosphere was unusual at this high school in Saraya County. Classes were suspended by the students themselves, who intended to show their solidarity with the students engaged in a standoff with university and state authorities.
"Supporting our fellow students"
For Salimatou Soumaré, president of the student government at the high school, this mobilization is first and foremost an act of solidarity. "It's to support our fellow students. This is a 72-hour strike," she declared, emphasizing the peaceful and committed nature of the action.
Through this decision, the high school students of Saraya clearly demonstrate their desire to be part of a national movement, where pupils and students now seem united around a common struggle.
Clear demands
The CA-UCAD's motto is based on several major requirements:
• The release of the student representatives currently detained;
• Clarification of the circumstances surrounding the death of Abdoulaye Bâ;
• Full payment of outstanding scholarship arrears.
These demands reflect a deep unease within the student community, marked by persistent tensions around study conditions, university governance and respect for students' rights.
A mobilization that is spreading
The 72-hour strike, scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, continues to garner strong support across the country. From secondary schools to universities, the movement is taking on a national dimension, revealing the growing interconnectedness between the various components of the education system.
In Saraya, students say they remain mobilized and determined to support the movement "until their demands are met." This stance illustrates the growing impact of the crisis in higher education, extending far beyond university lecture halls.
