Senegal's international standing has reached a new milestone on the Islamic world stage. This Wednesday, May 13, 2026, in Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan, the Republic of Senegal was appointed Vice-President of the 15th General Conference of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO). This strategic election places the country at the heart of the Conference Bureau for the next four years, alongside Egypt, which holds the presidency, and the Maldives, which was appointed rapporteur.

Senegal was represented at this high-level summit by Mr. Moustapha Mamba Guirassy, Minister of National Education and President of the Senegalese National Commission for ICESCO. This appointment was not a coincidence; it recognizes the active role and unwavering commitment of the Senegalese state to promoting intercultural dialogue, science, and educational excellence within the Islamic world.

Recognition of Senegalese expertise

This distinction comes amid a significant strengthening of ties between Dakar and the international organization. It notably echoes the recent official visit of the ICESCO Director General to Senegal for National Daara Day, an occasion that provided an opportunity to commend the Senegalese model of inclusive education and the protection of children's rights. The country's experience in preserving cultural values while embracing modernity was one of the key arguments for this recognition.

By assuming this position of responsibility, Senegal reaffirms its commitment to influencing the Organization's strategic direction until the 16th session. For the Ministry of National Education, this vice-presidency represents a unique opportunity to strengthen multilateral cooperation and share national expertise in the transformation of education and communication systems among member countries.
