Grève des enseignants : l’État coupe les salaires, voici les montants bloqués
The state has sanctioned teachers who participated in the strikes called by their unions in recent weeks. It has deducted money from the February salaries of those affected. "They made these deductions for five, six, or seven days of strike action, and the amounts range from 100,000 to 300,000 CFA francs. It's excessive and inexplicable," denounced El Hadji Malick Youm, Secretary General of the Autonomous Union of Secondary School Teachers (SAEMS), in the pages of L'Observateur.
Amidou Diédhiou, leader of the Union of Free Teachers of Senegal (SELS), who noted deductions of 50,000 to 281,000 CFA francs, echoes this sentiment in the same newspaper, questioning the government's calculation basis for setting the financial penalties.
Youm claims that this measure hides an unspoken truth: "It is a systematic theft that has been organized by the State of Senegal to fill its coffers from these amounts that have been deducted from teachers' salaries."
Acknowledging the deductions from their salaries, the union members promise to retaliate. "This systematic and organized theft will be punished with a response commensurate with the act committed," threatens the general secretary of SAEMS. Amidou Diédhiou echoes this sentiment: "We will organize the response and confront this."
In a statement reported by L'Observateur, teachers' unions announced the next steps in their action plan: a work stoppage, followed by departmental general assemblies, was scheduled for Wednesday. The movement will continue with a general strike this Thursday, two days of work stoppages next Monday and Tuesday, before another complete shutdown the following Friday.
“We are ready to paralyze the school and to systematically block everything: there will be no assessments, there will be no compositions either, and we will even jeopardize the exams. We cannot be in a country where the State allows itself to do everything without respecting the legal provisions,” El Hadji Malick Youm rants.
