Deuil, colère et responsabilité : "Quand l’État sacrifie ses enfants" (Mouvement des étudiants Jëf Jël)
"Senegal woke up this morning with a hangover, bruised by horror." The statement comes from the Jëf Jël student movement, which observes that "Cheikh Anta Diop University, a temple of knowledge, has been transformed into a 'battlefield' where blind repression has ultimately committed the irreparable."
The Jëf Jël Student Movement expressed its profound sorrow at the loss of our comrade Abdoulaye Ba, a second-year medical student, who fell while simply demanding the right to study with dignity. They offered their deepest condolences to his grieving family and the entire student community. However, the Jëf Jël students believe that "this is not just a time for tears. It is a time for truth and for demanding justice."
Double punishment: bloody repression and inhumane expulsion
"While our comrade's blood is still wet, the only concrete response from the authorities has been the brutal closure of the student residence by the COUD (University Social Services Center) and the evacuation of the dorm rooms," the students of Jëf Jël protested. They denounced "this cynical and irresponsible decision." For them, "throwing thousands of students out onto the street, without resources and in the midst of mourning, adds humiliation to tragedy."
They also condemned "the flagrant violation of university autonomy." For these students, "the disproportionate intervention of law enforcement, even inside the student residences, is the direct cause of this tragedy."
Appeal to the Senegalese people
"At a time when some are passing the buck through press releases, seeking to profit from the bloodshed, we call on the People to open their eyes. You cannot build a sovereign nation by killing its doctors, its engineers and its thinkers of tomorrow," they note.
The Jëf Jël student movement demands: "the immediate reopening of the student social campus; the permanent departure of the security forces from the university premises; and the full payment of scholarships." Furthermore, they demand "that justice be served for Abdoulaye Ba, not with words, but with actions, for the honor of Senegalese students, for the survival of our nation."
