Kédougou : Le lycée de Salémata décrète 24h de grève en soutien aux étudiants de l’UCAD
In an atmosphere that was both determined and peaceful, hundreds of students from the Salémata high school joined a strike movement this Monday morning in support of students at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD). This action echoes several weeks of student mobilization in Dakar concerning the inadequacy and delay in the payment of university scholarships, a struggle now shared far beyond the university walls.
Classes were suspended at the high school at 8:30 a.m., when the student assembly unanimously voted for a strike. Waving placards and chanting slogans such as "Scholarships for all, a future for all" and "Our brothers and sisters, we are with you," the high school students expressed their refusal to see young people left behind in the Senegalese education system.
“We’re not at university yet, but this fight is ours too,” said Mariama Cissé, a high school senior in the science track. “Those who are showing us the way today are the students fighting for decent study conditions.”
For these high school students, this strike is a way to remind everyone that education, whether at the high school or university level, is a fundamental right. Many also express their fear of finding themselves in the same precarious situation as their elders in the future.
