Marche pacifique à Saint-Louis : Les étudiants rendent hommage à leurs martyrs et dénoncent l’impunité
The Saint-Louis Student Coordination (CESL) organized a peaceful march in Saint-Louis this Thursday to commemorate several students who died during protests at Senegalese universities. This demonstration also served as a platform to denounce the persistent difficulties in higher education, including the repeated closure of university restaurants and the lack of legal response to the tragedies that have befallen the student community.
According to Amadou Ba, chair of the CESL session, this day has been declared a "black day" at Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis. It is intended to pay tribute to the late Alpha Yoro Tounkara and Prospère Cléodor Senghor, two students who died on campus while demonstrating, according to the organizers, to defend the common good and denounce situations deemed unjust.
In his address, Amadou Ba denounced the recurring violence in Senegalese universities and the impunity that, according to him, surrounds these incidents. "Universities are neither cemeteries nor battlefields," he insisted, asserting that as long as the perpetrators of these acts are not identified and punished, further tragedies will continue to occur.
The coordinating body also brought up other high-profile cases, notably that of Mouhamadou Fallou Sène, whose trial is scheduled for June 26, 2026. However, the students expressed their distrust, citing lengthy delays and procedures they consider dilatory. They are therefore demanding fair and swift justice for all victims, including Balla Gaye, Abdoulaye Ba, Prospère Senghor, and Alpha Yoro Tounkara.
Beyond legal issues, the CESL pointed to the management by university authorities, in particular the closures deemed arbitrary of university restaurants, which, according to them, worsen the living conditions of students.
For the protesters, these decisions contribute to a climate of constant tension on campuses. The students have called on state and judicial authorities, as well as the National Assembly, to become fully involved so that the truth is uncovered in these cases.
Determined, the student community of Saint-Louis affirms that it will continue the fight "until justice is done", reaffirming that the university must remain a temple of knowledge and not a place of violence.
