Matam : En plus de la Grève des Enseignants, Des Mouvements de Protestation et Manifestations des élèves paralysent le système
In many schools across the region, an unprecedented mobilization has emerged as students have massively boycotted the standardized assessments. These exams, usually supervised by their regular teachers, were this time administered by teachers assigned by the regional education authority—an exceptional measure implemented to compensate for the absence of striking teachers. The protest movement quickly took shape: after completing the exams yesterday, Monday, several students in the final two years of secondary school decided, by mutual agreement, to walk out of class this Tuesday, February 11, 2026. They thus expressed a collective refusal to take these assessments, despite them being a key tool for monitoring student progress.
The reasons for this boycott are deep and multifaceted. According to numerous accounts, "this refusal stems primarily from the accumulation of numerous strikes, which have disrupted the normal course of classes for several weeks." "Worried about the delays already incurred for their final exams, such as the Brevet de Fin d'Etudes Moyennes (French middle school diploma) or the Baccalauréat (French high school diploma), students are already suffering from a lack of concentration and conditions conducive to teaching and learning."
In parallel with the boycott by middle and high school students, students in the regional capital demonstrated this morning. Indeed, sympathetic to the tense situation prevailing at national universities, marked by student protests, and wanting to support the students arrested during the demonstrations, whose immediate and unconditional release they demand, students took to the streets. Their anger is also fueled by a personal tragedy: they are grieving the death of their brother, Abdoulaye Ba, a promising young medical student from the region, whose death has deeply affected the local population.
This demonstration, led mainly by secondary school students, who displaced elementary school students and students from a private secondary school, was however quickly dispersed by law enforcement from the Matam urban police station.
