Matam : La grève du G7 paralyse le système scolaire
The education sector in the eleventh region was paralyzed on Friday, January 30, 2026. Following union directives, teachers affiliated with the G7 (a coalition of seven primary and secondary school unions) massively boycotted classes. The action, widely supported by the local inter-union group, led to the closure of classrooms and a complete halt to teaching and learning.
In the Matam district, the usually bustling schools and colleges are deserted. In addition to the absence of teachers and students, the vendors, who are regulars at these places, are also absent.
The strike by the inter-union group marks a new stage in the standoff between teachers and the state over compliance with signed agreements.
The G7 trade unionists, who denounce "the absence of real proposals for clearing the liabilities of the signed agreements," have been rolling out a third action plan since Wednesday, January 28, 2026, aimed at forcing the government to respect its commitments.
Following the boycott of assessments, including the Phares, compositions and activities of the educational animation cells, announced last Wednesday, a work stoppage from 9 a.m. followed by departmental general assemblies and local communications of the G7 was organized on Thursday, January 29, 2026.
The total strike in schools this Friday, January 30, 2026, represents a step in the unfolding of activities included in the response plan.
