Saint-Louis : La colère des étudiants embrase l’UGB
Tensions have risen again in Senegalese universities. Following protests at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar (UCAD), Gaston Berger University (UGB) in Saint-Louis was, in turn, the scene of violent clashes this Friday afternoon between students and law enforcement.
The incidents erupted following a general assembly organized around 4 p.m. by the Saint-Louis Student Coordination (CESL). At the end of this meeting, the students decided to intensify their protest movement, denouncing what they consider a lack of concrete responses to their demands.
At the heart of the anger: the temporary closure of university restaurants announced by the CROUS (Regional Center for Student Services). A decision interpreted by students as a retaliatory measure against the so-called "no-ticket" days, implemented to demand full payment of outstanding scholarships.
Very quickly, the UGB campus was transformed into a veritable battlefield. Stone throwing, tear gas grenade firing and chases punctuated the afternoon, plunging the university into an atmosphere of high tension.
Although the initial demand was for scholarship delays, the suspension of the catering service has amplified the anger of the students, who see it as a further provocation.
This simultaneous resumption of protest movements at UCAD and UGB is now fueling fears of a wider crisis within the Senegalese higher education system.
