Saint-Louis : le SAEMS hausse le ton et fustige un discours jugé hostile aux enseignants
In Saint-Louis, the mobilization of the education sector remains strong. This Tuesday, March 3, 2026, on the occasion of the fifth G7 action plan, the SAEMS strongly denounced what it considers to be "anti-teacher" rhetoric and actions on the part of the authorities.
Speaking to activists, El Hadji Malick Youm, national secretary general of SAEMS and member of the G7, emphasized the central role of teachers in building the Senegalese state. "All authorities must understand what they have become thanks to the teachers of Senegal," he stressed, calling for greater recognition, respect, and consideration for those he described as "the builders of the nation."
The union leader specifically pointed to certain statements made recently in the National Assembly, as well as decisions attributed to the Ministry of Finance.
According to him, these measures have resulted in a "systematic sabotage" of teachers' salaries, notably through an over-taxation that can reach, or even exceed, 50%. SAEMS considers this situation contrary to current legislation.
Contrary to the accusations being circulated, the union representative was keen to clarify that the struggle is not about a salary increase. "We are not asking for money, but for pay equity and an end to the unjustified deductions from our income," he insisted, describing the fight primarily as focused on the dignity of teachers.
After two years of social calm, the SAEMS believes it is time for the authorities to present a clear and ambitious vision for the future of Senegalese schools. Presenting themselves as "guardians" of this educational system, which they describe as "the social elevator of the Republic," the union calls on all teachers to remain mobilized.
An evaluation of the fifth action plan is expected in the coming days at the G7 summit, with the prospect of new initiatives. "We will not back down," warned El Hadji Malick Youm, emphasizing that teachers intend to be respected and reject any political manipulation.
For SAEMS, the issue goes beyond corporate demands: it is, according to them, about preserving the future of Senegalese schools and, beyond that, that of the entire country.
