Sédhiou : La rentrée à l'Épreuve de l'Hivernage et des Abris Provisoires
The start of the school year in the Sédhiou region, located in Lower Casamance, Senegal, is traditionally a period marked by unique challenges. In the heavily rainy area, the resumption of classes is combined with the constraints of the rainy season and a significant number of schools still relying on temporary shelters (TS). This situation creates a precarious learning environment, threatening the quality of education and compliance with the timetable.
The Difficulties
Wintering and the presence of temporary shelters are the two main sources of difficulty for a peaceful return to school in Sédhiou. Even if for
Torrential rains often make tracks and paths impassable, isolating some villages and preventing students and teachers from reaching schools. This results in low levels of effectiveness during the first few days of the school year and recurring absences.
From a health perspective, humidity and stagnant water often promote the proliferation of mosquitoes and, consequently, malaria, which is a major cause of absenteeism and school dropouts. Transporting and delivering desks and teaching materials thus becomes a logistical headache when roads are flooded or muddy.
Regarding temporary shelters, a significant number of classes are housed in temporary shelters (often shacks made of lightweight materials). These structures are particularly vulnerable to the elements. Loosely secured mud walls or straw/sheet metal roofs can collapse or be blown away by wind and rain, endangering the lives of occupants and forcing the suspension of classes.
It is in this sense that the head of the regional executive convened a regional development committee (CRD) to engage stakeholders to tackle the current challenges head on.
In response to the regional executive's call, COSYDEP organized a day of weeding and cleaning at the Santossou nursery school with the support of the municipal youth council, the adolescent center, and the parents' association. The school is now ready to welcome its occupants on October 6 for the teaching staff and on the 8th for the students.
The same dynamic is underway at the Mamadou Mane Ba municipal secondary school. The parents' association and the local community association are on site for the final touches, reports outgoing principal Waly Samb.
As for Ibou Diallo High School, everything is ready for the effective start of classes on the first day of the school year, according to the school censor. In any case, from an environmental perspective, the working environment is already welcoming. The classrooms are disinfected, and the courtyard is weeded, pending the major renovations announced by the school construction department.

Le premier trait distinctif, c’est la jeunesse des manifestants. Même par rapport au « mouvement du 20 février » 2011 [version marocaine des « printemps arabes »], qui était déjà un mouvement de jeunes, cette GenZ 212 rassemble de très jeunes gens, y compris des mineurs. Deuxième élément, on ne sait toujours pas qui est à l’origine du mouvement, si ce n’est qu’il est parti de plateformes – notamment Discord – qui ont permis d’échapper au contrôle
