Université Souleymane Niang de Matam : "Il ne s’agit pas de répéter les erreurs du passé, mais de bâtir une université contemporaine", (DC MESRI)
Souleymane Niang University of Matam (USNM), created by decree in December 2022, is taking a decisive new step. A workshop brought together experts from the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI), members of the technical committee, and partners to present the training offerings of this future university.
According to Ababacar Guèye, Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (MESRI), "a university is not just about buildings. It is also about content, an adapted training offer, UFRs and institutes capable of meeting today's challenges. Souleymane Niang University thus aims to be different from previous ones, by favoring a match between training and employment, while promoting local realities.
The USNM aims to be both rooted in the Matamois region and open to Senegal and the world. It will integrate ancestral knowledge, local economic realities, and national development issues. As Mr. Guèye pointed out, "it is not a question of repeating the mistakes of the past, but of building a contemporary university, capable of training competent citizens and meeting the needs of the country."
Anchored in a region with a strong agricultural and pastoral vocation, but also rich in religious and cultural heritage, the USNM offers courses oriented towards agriculture, livestock breeding, the extractive industry, Islamic sciences and endogenous knowledge.
Professor Mamadou Sidibé, coordinator-rector of the university, specified that six centers have worked on the curricula to offer diversified but above all professional training.
"We have avoided general degrees. All our degrees will be vocational or professional in order to give students skills that can be directly used in the job market," he assured.
The selected fields cover science and technology, engineering, economics and management, health, human and social sciences, arts and literature, and also religious sciences.
Construction work on the USNM is progressing. The handover of the keys is scheduled for October 2026, when the university will welcome its first cohort of students. In its initial phase, 1,500 students are expected, with a gradual increase of up to 25,000 learners.
