Suspension des amicales à l’UCAD : Le collectif dénonce une décision « irresponsable et autoritaire »
Following the decision by the academic council of Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar to "suspend, as a precautionary measure and until further notice, student associations", the Collective of associations of Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD) took to the airwaves on February 12, 2026, to denounce an "irresponsible and authoritarian" measure.
In a statement released this Thursday, the group asserts that this decision was made "with the aim of silencing student demands and stifling the student voice in order to push through reforms that undermine the gains of our community." Furthermore, it reflects a desire to avoid dialogue. "This decision demonstrates the authorities' refusal to engage in dialogue and their reliance on institutional force. It's an admission of guilt!" the statement asserts.
Regarding the continuity of educational and scientific activities, student representatives are making this resumption contingent upon the opening of the student social campus. "There can be no continuity of educational activities without the prior opening of the student social campus," the group maintains, noting that "the majority of UCAD students do not have relatives in Dakar, making it impossible for them to continue their studies in any form without effective access to the student social campus."
In this sense, the collective "calls on its community to stay home and not give in to any pressure from the authorities. No decision can suspend our union dignity," the text insists, before reaffirming its "unwavering commitment to the valiant student community."
Denouncing that "three members of the collective are still in detention, while others are actively being sought" after the death of student Abdoulaye Ba, the collective affirms that "the acts of torture and vandalism perpetrated by the FDS in front of the entire population cannot escape justice."
Thus, they demand that the authorities "return the autopsy report of student Abdoulaye Ba, with the signature of the prosecutor, to his family in order to shed full light on the circumstances of his death."
