The Saint-Louis Student Coordination (CESL) has announced a new mobilization on the Gaston Berger University campus, marked by a temporary suspension of educational activities in order to protest against delays related to student allowances.

Suspension of teaching activities at Gaston Berger University

In a press release issued on March 2, 2026 in Saint-Louis, the Saint-Louis Student Coordination decreed a 24-hour cessation of all educational activities, a measure presented as renewable depending on how the situation evolves.

According to the student organization, this decision comes to demand that the competent authorities regularize the back payments of allowances owed to the beneficiaries, an issue that has been fueling student concerns for several weeks.

Students are demanding payment of outstanding student allowances.

In the document signed by the session chair, Amadou Ba, the CESL requests:

• Full payment of arrears owed to recipients of study allowances;

• Maintaining social benefits until a concerted revision of decree no. 2014-963 relating to study allowances.

Student leaders believe that any reform of the allowance system must be done through dialogue in order to avoid a deterioration of students' social conditions.

A mobilization presented as a commitment to the student cause

The Saint-Louis Student Coordination reaffirms, in its statement, its commitment to defending the material and educational interests of students and says it is willing to continue discussions with university and government authorities.

This new social tension comes at a time when the issue of student grants remains a major concern in several universities in Senegal, particularly with regard to payment delays and the modalities of reforming the system.
