UAM : Les étudiants dénoncent une injustice et réclament leurs ordinateurs
At Amadou Mahtar Mbow University (UAM) in Diamniadio, student anger continues to grow. Exasperated by the delayed delivery of promised computers, they denounce broken commitments, the intrusion of law enforcement onto campus, and are calling on the State and teachers' unions on the eve of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG).
Faced with the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the acquisition of their digital tools, students have intensified their actions by barricading the entrance to the university administration building. They claim they want to protect their faculty and researchers by focusing their protest on the administrative authorities.
"We need our teacher-researchers in our fight, not to be against them," said Mamadou Diop, the spokesperson for the collective, emphasizing the strategic nature of this mobilization.
Verbal promises from the administration are no longer enough. Despite the announcement of an exceptional exemption approved by the Prime Minister's office to expedite the process, the students are demanding official documents. The Rector's threat to extend classes beyond May 31st is considered unacceptable, especially as the Tabaski festival is approaching and the students fear their academic year will be extended until 2027.
University freedoms violated
The blockade of the university administration building was marked by the arrest of two plainclothes police officers who had infiltrated the campus. The students, invoking the principle of academic freedom, handed the officers over to their superiors without incident.
The group warns, however, that such intrusions, in a tense political climate, could escalate. They state that they will take over campus security themselves if these provocations are repeated.
The paradox of the Youth Olympic Games
The preparation for the Youth Olympic Games is bringing tensions to a head. Students are denouncing a "double standard" policy: while their demands have been stalled for seven months, the state has mobilized considerable resources to renovate university rooms intended for foreign delegations.
"You should have thought of your own sons first before housing those of other nations," they criticize.
Determined to see this through, the student leaders have issued a solemn appeal to the National Trade Union Front, particularly to the SAES and SUDES unions. They believe that the sacrifice imposed on the students foreshadows an injustice that will affect the entire university community. True to their peaceful approach, they affirm their intention to defend their dignity and their rights.
