UCAD : Ces scènes inouïes qui illustrent le quotidien difficile des étudiants
Since the closure of the university restaurants at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD) on February 6, 2026, thousands of students have been facing severe food insecurity. The decision, made by the Dakar University Social Services Center (COUD), followed "days without tickets" (JST), which university authorities described as sabotage.
Alarming survival conditions on campus
Deprived of school meals, many students are forced to cook in rudimentary conditions on campus. Others rely on food distributed by volunteers. But the long lines attest to the extent of the hunger affecting the students.
Widely shared images on social media show students eating from jars, plastic bags, or makeshift containers. These scenes have been deemed shocking by many internet users, illustrating the harsh daily reality faced by students right now.
Student anger and social demands
As a reminder, the COUD (University Center for Student Services) closed the university restaurants as a sanction against the JST (Student Solidarity Days), during which meals were served free of charge. For their part, the students are denouncing their precarious living conditions and demanding, in particular, the payment of outstanding scholarships, arguing that the closure is exacerbating an already difficult situation.
A tarnished image for UCAD
This crisis comes at a sensitive time for UCAD, an emblematic institution of higher education in West Africa. The scenes of distress observed on campus stand in stark contrast to the stated ambitions for the Senegalese university.
Many observers consider the situation unacceptable and call for urgent and concrete responses from the competent authorities in order to avoid a worsening of the student social crisis.
