UCAD : L’Amicale de la FMPO rejette sa suspension et cesse toute activité pédagogique
Tensions remain high at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD). In a statement released on February 15, 2026, the Student Association of the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry (FMPO) rejected the Academic Council's decision to suspend student associations and announced the cessation of all academic activities until further notice.
A decision deemed "illegal and arbitrary"
Presenting itself as "the only structure legally responsible for defending the students" of the faculty, the association asserts that the suspension measure taken by the Academic Council is "illegal, arbitrary, unjustified and an attack on the freedom of student organization".
She reaffirms, in the process, her "full legitimacy" to represent students and to defend their material and moral interests.
Controversy surrounding the death of Abdoulaye Ba
Beyond the suspension, the statement goes into great detail about the circumstances that led to the death of student Abdoulaye Ba, a tragedy that deeply affected the university and medical community.
The student association says it was "deeply shocked" by the public prosecutor's statement, which refers to "clashes" in its contextualization of the events. According to the association, the videos circulating on social media actually depict an "attack" by the defense and security forces against students.
She also highlights a contradiction between this version of events and the findings of an autopsy conducted by sworn medical professionals, which reportedly revealed severe multiple injuries suffered by the student. This situation, according to the student organization, "reinforces the demand for truth, justice, and accountability."
Refusal to resume classes and a call for dialogue
The association also opposes the Academic Council's decision to immediately resume teaching activities. It believes that such a resumption, in a context of mourning and shock, constitutes an attempt to trivialize the events.
Consequently, it announces that no educational activities will be held "until clear foundations are established regarding the follow-up to the investigation," so that the whole truth can be revealed about this matter.
Among its demands, the Association calls for: the immediate release of all students it considers to be unjustly arrested; support for victims at all levels; a suspension of the reforms undertaken by the authorities; full payment of scholarship arrears and the opening of the social campus.
In these "exceptional circumstances", the organization solemnly invites the President of the Republic of Senegal to engage in direct dialogue with the students.
In conclusion, the FMPO Student Association reaffirms its determination to defend the "rights, dignity and security" of students, in a university climate still marked by strong tension and deep emotion.
