UGB : L’Amicale des étudiants de Kaolack réclame ses subventions et interpelle Serigne Mboup
The Association of Students from Kaolack at Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis is sounding the alarm. Faced with a situation deemed "precarious and worrying," the members of the organization are calling on local authorities, particularly the mayor of Kaolack, Serigne Mboup, to honor their commitments regarding subsidies.
According to Serigne Mortalla Faye, spokesperson for the student association, the housing crisis at UGB has reached a critical level. "Gaston-Berger University is facing a severe shortage of housing. In this context, student associations are often the last resort to allow new high school graduates to have a roof over their heads," he explains.
Despite its crucial role, the Kaolack Student Association claims to have received no subsidies for two years, neither from the city hall, nor the departmental council, nor even from any generous donations from the region. This situation is all the more alarming given that the organization welcomed over 150 new high school graduates this year… who are now without accommodation.
"If urgent interventions are not made, these young people risk abandoning their university studies," warns Serigne Mortalla Faye.
Faced with this risk, the association is making an urgent appeal to local authorities and committed stakeholders in Kaolack: "We ask Mayor Serigne Mboup, the president of the departmental council, and all those of goodwill in the municipality of Kaolack to help the association, even if only by providing accommodation or enabling the support of new students."
The spokesperson also reiterated that the requested subsidies are not a favor, but a right. Indeed, within the framework of decentralization, certain expenditures – notably subsidies – fall under the optional, but legally mandated, responsibilities of local authorities. "The subsidies granted to associations are of the same order as those granted to sports and cultural associations," he clarified.
Founded in 1987, the Association of Students from Kaolack now has over 1,000 members. It says it hopes for swift action from the authorities, "so as not to leave hundreds of young people from Kaolack in distress at UGB."
