Université Amadou Mahtar Mbow : Le SUDES-ESR dénonce une «forfaiture» du recteur
The Unified and Democratic Union of Teachers of Senegal - Higher Education and Research Section (SUDES-ESR) strongly denounces what it considers to be an unprecedented drift by the rector of the Amadou Mahtar Mbow University (UAM).
According to the members of the said union, the latter illegally assumed the prerogatives of the President of the Republic, as stipulated in article 38 of decree n°2021-1503, by terminating, by a simple rectoral order, the functions of the duly elected director of the UFR Sciences and Advanced Technologies (UFR STA).
"This punitive measure comes as a result of the director's legitimate refusal" to submit to a decision deemed illegal, aimed at reinstating a trainee teacher-researcher already dismissed by the UFR Council on December 6, 2024 for holding multiple jobs.
SUDES-ESR reiterates that the decision of the Faculty of Science and Technology (UFR STA) Council fell entirely within its deliberative powers, in accordance with Article 32 of the aforementioned decree. By imposing a will contrary to this decision, the Board of Directors committed a clear abuse of power, transforming this strategic body into a mere rubber-stamping body.
For the union, this illegitimate intervention constitutes an "institutional breach" which calls into question the fundamental principles of university governance in Senegal.
The union also emphasizes the troubling context of this affair: a rector nearing the end of his term and close to retirement, who, according to them, is attempting to set a dangerous precedent by flouting the autonomy of academic bodies, guaranteed by the 1994 law on academic freedom and university autonomy. SUDES-ESR denounces this "scorched earth" strategy and firmly rejects what it considers an attempt to dismantle academic authority within public universities.
Despite this tense situation, SUDES-ESR applauds the courage of the colleague appointed to serve as interim head, as well as that of the Council of the UFR STA, which it considers to be symbols of resistance against this assault.
Consequently, the union demands that the rector immediately cease all moral and administrative harassment, calls for strict respect for the powers between the different bodies of the UAM and calls on the university community to be vigilant and mobilized to defend the autonomy of the UFRs and university democracy.
SUDES-ESR warns that it remains mobilized and does not rule out any action, including legal action, to ensure that law and justice are respected in this case.

Dr sakho est l’un des doyens les plus chevronnés de cette université et nulle ne peut l’enlever mm ce recteur n’y peut rien.
il est le fondement de cette UFR jusqu’à investir ces propres capitaux dans des laboratoires pour la prospérité et la diversité de cet UFR .
De ce fait nous exigeons la réintégration immédiate et sans précédent de notre chère Aimé Directeur Dr Sakho et que la paix soit avec lui .

Yénene ufr yi sunu nawlé lagn. Mieux vaut que vous régliez cette affaire avant ça ne prenne de l’ampleur.
Mais au Sénégal, on préfère souvent « se partager le gâteau » entre grands, alors sa présence dérangeait fortement le recteur et certains membres de ce cercle privilégié.
Je fais confiance à la justice sénégalaise pour qu’elle ne laisse pas passer cette injustice et cet abus d’autorité.
