Université du Sine-Saloum El Hadj Ibrahima Niass : Des étudiants blessés, d'autres arrêtés après des manifestations sur le campus de Kaffrine
Tensions rose this morning at the University of Sine-Saloum El Hadji Ibrahima Niass (USSEIN), particularly on the Kaffrine campus, following the closure of university restaurants decided by the Regional Center for University Social Works of Sine-Saloum (CROUS).
Angry students denounce a decision "contrary to the commitments made by the authorities" and demand "the immediate reopening" of dining areas.
According to Al Hassan Ba, their representative, "the campus restaurants were closed without consultation, even though university meals are a fundamental right for students." He asserts that this measure "has created hardship for hundreds of students who rely on these subsidized meals."
In protest, students on the Kaffrine campus attempted to "paralyze the city's education system." Early in the morning, they forced students out of Waly Thiobane Middle School, Babacar Cobar Ndao High School, and a primary school. The situation escalated when law enforcement intervened to disperse the demonstrators. According to Al Hassan Ba, "several students were arrested by the police and others taken to the hospital after exchanges of stones and tear gas."
A fragile calm currently reigns around the campus, but tensions remain high. The students have announced their intention to continue their protest until the university restaurants reopen.
