Université Gaston Berger : la CESL décrète 72 heures de « Journées sans ticket » et durcit le ton
Tensions are rising at Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis. The Saint-Louis Student Coordination (CESL) has declared 72 hours of "Ticket-Free Days," a renewable measure, to express its dissatisfaction with several demands deemed priorities.
In a press release published on February 16, 2026, the CESL announced a series of demands addressed to the relevant authorities. Among them is the immediate and unconditional release of their fellow representatives at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), who are currently in detention.
The coordinating body also demands "truth and justice" for their colleague Abdoulaye Ba, as well as the full payment of back pay owed to his beneficiaries. Another key point of their demands is the preservation of students' social benefits until a collaborative review of Decree No. 2014-963 concerning student allowances.
A renewable mobilization
The decision to declare "Ticket-Free Days" reflects a desire to maintain pressure on university and government authorities. This form of protest, already used in the past in Senegalese universities, generally consists of boycotting the payment of meal tickets or certain university services, in order to disrupt the normal functioning of the campus.
The CESL warns that these 72 hours are renewable, thus leaving open the possibility of a hardening of the movement if no concrete progress is made.
A reaffirmed commitment
In its message, the Saint-Louis Student Coordination reiterates its "commitment and availability to the student cause." This statement underscores the determination of student leaders to continue the mobilization until their demands are met.
While the social climate remains tense in several universities across the country, this latest decision by the CESL could reignite tensions within Senegalese higher education. The coming days will be crucial in gauging the extent of the movement and the response of the relevant authorities.
