Université Gaston Berger : les étudiants de Saint-Louis décrètent un mois de non-paiement des chambres et exigent le respect des acquis
Tensions are rising at Gaston Berger University (UGB). Following a general assembly held this Tuesday, the Saint-Louis Student Coordination announced a drastic measure: the withholding of room fees for the entire month of February 2026. This decision was presented as an act of protest against the ongoing difficulties related to student grants and the delays in payment of outstanding student allowances.
In a statement released after the meeting, student representatives demanded full and immediate payment of back pay to those entitled to it, arguing that these delays further weaken living conditions on campus.
The Coordination also demands the maintenance of social gains until "a concerted review" of decree no. 2014-963 governing study allowances, a text which students now consider ill-suited to current realities.
“We cannot continue to bear the consequences of decisions made without consultation alone. Students are experiencing very difficult situations,” said a member of the Coordination, encountered at the exit of the general assembly.
According to several students, delays in allowance payments and uncertainty surrounding social rights directly affect their daily lives, including access to housing, food, and minimum conditions for academic living.
"Many of us are struggling to make ends meet. This month of not paying for rooms is a strong signal for the authorities to finally hear us," explains a student resident of the campus.
This decision comes in a national context marked by recurring tensions in public universities, where issues related to scholarships, university housing and social governance remain at the heart of student demands.
The Saint-Louis Student Coordination, however, affirms that it remains open to dialogue and reiterates "its commitment and availability for the cause of the student," calling on university and state authorities to prioritize consultation in order to avoid an escalation of the crisis.
So far, there has been no official reaction from the UGB administration or the Ministry of Higher Education. But on the Saint-Louis campus, the students' resolve seems firmly established.
